Associated to the sting apparatus of the aculeate hymenopterans is found the poison gland, originated from the glands associated to the ovipositor of the non-aculeate hymenopterans and the less derived Dufour gland, homologue of the coletterial gland of other insects, and found in all hymenopteran females. The Dufour gland functions is mostly uncertain in hymenopterans but in ants it is involved with communication and defense and in non social bees with the nest building and protection. In wasps possibly with kin-recognition. Differences in morphology and chemical composition of the gland secretion were observed among species, in the same species, between the castes in the social species and among individual of the same caste playing different tasks or... |

In this study, the gross morphology of the mouthparts and foregut of the ghost shrimp Lepidophthalmus siriboia were investigated from larvae and postlarvae reared in the laboratory. The mouthparts (maxillae and maxillipeds) of the zoeae have a reduced number of setae and spines (or is absent in some individuals), and the foregut, under developed, have few minute setae in the cardiac and pyloric chambers. In contrast, after the metamorphosis into megalopa stage, all feeding appendages have many setae and, the foregut shows a well-developed gastric mill with strong lateral teeth. In the juvenile stage occurs an increase of setae and spines in the mouthparts and the foregut becomes more specialized. These observations strongly suggest that a lecithotrophic... |

This is the first revision for the representatives of the genus Caiophora (Loasaceae) in Chile. The genus is widely distributed in the Andes from Argentina/Chile in the South to Central Ecuador in the North, and comprises approximately 60 species. In Chile only five species are present, Caiophora chuquitensis, C. cirsiifolia, C. coronata, C. deserticola sp. nov. and C. rosulata. Caiophora rosulata is here subdivided into two subspecies: western Andean C. rosulata subsp. rosulata (present in northern Chile and southern Peru), and eastern Andean C. rosulata subsp. taraxacoides, stat. and comb. nov. Furthermore C. superba syn. nov. and C. macrocarpa syn. nov. are placed into synonymy under C. chuquitensis, and C. rahmeri syn. nov. is synonymized to C.... |

ABSTRACT Thousands of years of tradition of olive cultivation in Montenegro is witnessed with the ‘Old olive’ estimated to be more than 2000 years old. ‘Old olive’ draws attention to its genetic potential and the relation to the closest grown olive cultivars. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to give the basic description of ‘Old olive’ (through 20 morphological and 37 chemical properties) as well as to determine its DNA profile and to examine the closeness with major olive cultivar grown, cv. ‘Žutica’. The obtained data showed the differences between examined samples. ‘Old olive’ started flowering (27. May) more than 10 days later than cv. ‘Žutica’ (14. May), and began ripening 15 days later (20th October and 5th October, respectively). From 21... |

Basic hematological information about the avian in its natural habitat is limited. In this study we aimed at investigating, in the peripherical blood of the roadside hawk, Buteo magnirostris, the number of thrombocytes and their morphological, cytochemical and ultrastructural aspects. Blood smears were submited to the following methods: Leishman for morphological analysis and specific methods for the characterization of four kinds of macromolecules of different chemical nature: Glycogen, lysosomal enzymes (myeloperoxidase and the acid phosphatase), basic polyaminoacid rich proteins and phospholipids. The average number of thrombocytes was 26.8 x 10³ ± 10,2 / µL. Structurally the thrombocytes present predominantly elliptic shape, with... |

ABSTRACT During a survey conducted in the Lajeado Reservoir of the Tocantins River, in the state of Tocantins, Brazil, dactylogyrids were recovered from the gills of Pimelodina flavipinnis. Initial morphological analysis showed these dactylogyrids shared aspects of character with species of Demidospermus, with affinity to Demidospermus pinirampi, despite exhibiting differences with the original description by Kritsky et al. (1987) regarding the vagina, the base of the male copulatory organ and the shape and length of the bars. The analysis of the holotypes of D. pinirampi and its most morphologically close species, Demidospermus luckyi, revealed that these dactylogyrids were indeed D. pinirampi. This study therefore reports a new host and locality of... |

The aim was to examine the morphology of spermatozoa with different staining methods and aimed to find the better staining methods for morphology of spermatozoa in our study. Randomized 67 patients taken for the study who were admitted to Assisted Reproductive Techniques Unit. In the first part of the study, smears were stained with Hematoxylin Eosin (HE), Toluidin Blue (TB), Giemsa, Wright, ferrous Weigert haematoxylin stain, Orange G, eosin-aniline blue dye, Shorr Method, Papanicolau, Berg Method, Light Green stain, Acridine Orange (AO) and Janus Green dyes. In the second part of the study, smear preparations of 10 patients with normozoospermic were stained with HE, Toluidin Blue (TB), Shorr Method and Papanicolau. Four measurements were made including... |

This study was undertaken to determine the effects of varied salinity regimes on the morphological traits (plant height, number of leaves, number of flowers, fresh and dry weight) and major mineral composition of 13 selected purslane accessions. Most of the morphological traits measured were reduced at varied salinity levels (0.0, 8, 16, 24 and 32 dS m-1), but plant height was found to increase in Ac1 at 16 dS m-1 salinity, and Ac13 was the most affected accession. The highest reductions in the number of leaves and number of flowers were recorded in Ac13 at 32 dS m-1 salinity compared to the control. The highest fresh and dry weight reductions were noted in Ac8 and Ac6, respectively, at 32 dS m-1 salinity, whereas the highest increase in both fresh and dry... |

ABSTRACT In this study, we investigated the differentiation of five different chicken ecotypes - Center, North, South, West, and East - of Saudi Arabia using discriminate analysis. The analysis was based on nine important morphological and phenotypic traits: body color, beak color, earlobe color, eye color, shank color, comb color, comb type, comb size, and feather distribution. There was a strong significant relationship between the phenotype and effect of geographic height in terms of comb type and earlobe color in males as well as body, beak, eye, and shank color. In particular, the comb type and earlobe color differentiated the ecotypes of males. Among the females, the beak, earlobe, eye, shank color, and feather distribution had more differentiating... |
